WHAT TO DO BEFORE YOU BUILD A FENCE?

Changing a fence is not easy nor is it pretty. Here are some suggestions:

1. ASSESS YOUR NEEDS AND GOALS
  • Purpose: Determine why you need a fence. Is it for privacy, security, aesthetics, or to keep pets or children safe?
  • Style: Choose a fence style that complements your home and landscape.
  • Materials: Consider wood, vinyl, chain-link, or metal options.
2. CHECK LOCAL REGULATIONS
  • Zoning Laws: Research local zoning regulations and restrictions. Are there height limits, setback requirements, or design guidelines?
  • Permits: Determine if you need a permit to build a fence. Some areas require permits for certain fence types.
3. SURVEY YOUR PROPERTY
  • Boundary Lines: Hire a surveyor to mark your property lines accurately. Avoid encroaching on neighboring properties.
  • Utilities: Locate underground utilities (water, gas, electric) to prevent accidental damage during installation.
4. TALK TO NEIGHBORS
  • Communication: Discuss your fence plans with neighbors. Address any concerns or potential disputes.
  • Shared Costs: If the fence is shared, agree on cost-sharing arrangements.
5. CHOOSE QUALITY MATERIALS
  • Durability: Invest in materials that withstand weather conditions and last long.
  • Maintenance: Consider maintenance requirements (painting, staining, etc.).
6. PLAN GATE PLACEMENT
  • Access Points: Decide where gates will be located. Consider ease of entry and exit.
  • Gate Types: Choose between single or double gates, sliding gates, or walk-through gates.
7. PREPARE THE GROUND
  • Clear Vegetation: Remove grass, shrubs, and debris along the fence line.
  • Level Ground: Ensure the ground is level for proper installation.
8. INSTALL PROPER FOUNDATIONS
  • Posts: Dig holes for fence posts. Use concrete or gravel for stability.
  • Spacing: Space posts evenly to support the fence panels.
9. BUILD THE FENCE
  • Panel Installation: Attach fence panels to the posts.
  • Gate Installation: Install gates securely.
  • Finishing Touches: Add caps, trim, and paint/stain as needed.
10. REGULAR MAINTENANCE
  • Inspect Regularly: Check for loose boards, rust, or damage.
  • Repairs: Address any issues promptly to prolong the fence’s life.
